What are Pokemon Go Gyms and How To Find?
Pokemon Go Gyms are special points of interest found throughout the world. Pokemon Go uses the GPS on your phone to place you in its Pokemon world. On the main screen it is usually difficult to miss the gyms they’re the biggest icons or structures on your map. Look out for the colourful towers near and far – they’re usually located in places of interest or hubs of activity, and Pokemon are often visible at the top of the map icon. There will be a Pokemon sitting above them. Gyms appear as towering structures in the Map View. These locations are all set on the servers and can be seen by all. If you see a gym which is silver, then that means it is currently uninhabited and can be taken for your team. You can select a Pokémon to look after the gym.
You can capture these Gyms for your Team and battle the Pokémon of rival Teams there. Gyms can be challenged by multiple Trainers at the same time. Like the player, Gyms have levels but you can’t control the level too much. Pokemon Gym’s level is determined by its prestige. As a Gym earns prestige, it increases in level. The higher a Gym’s level, the more Pokémon can be assigned to it, which makes it harder for rival Teams to capture. A Gym’s prestige increases when you assign a trained Pokémon to it, and also when teammates assign additional Pokémon.
If the prestige hits 0, then the gym is lost to the team and can be claimed by any other player. As the gym increases in level, more players in your team can place Pokémon there. If you and another player of your team are attacking the same gym, both player’s Pokémon appear in the game and will attack the opponent at the same time. Each gym can house up to 10 Pokémon. Look out for the colourful towers near and far – they’re usually located in places of interest or hubs of activity, and Pokemon are often visible at the top of the map icon. There will be a Pokemon sitting above them.
How To Join a Gym in Pokemon Go?
The initial phase of Pokémon Go game primarily involves of catching Pokémon, gathering Gather Poké Balls, Potions & Eggs and earning XP to increase one’s Trainer Level. Pokemon Go battles can only occur in a gym. Players who have played earlier Pokemon games understand this concept fairly well, but if this is your first time with a Pokemon game, you are in for some learning. You must be at least Level 5 to participate in gym battles. Until then, you should focus on catching as many Pokémon as you can in order to level up and have plenty of Pokémon at your disposal to prepare for battles.
How To Join Gym in Pokemon Go?
Once you hit Level 5, you will be able to enter Training Gyms or Join Gym in Pokemon Go and become the Gym Leader. These are the places where the battles occur and you buff your Pokemon up. The first thing that you will be asked to do after entering a gym will be to join a team. Professor Willow will pop up to introduce you to his three assistants, each of which directs a team, and they all have a different approach to researching pokémon. There are three to join – Team Valor, Team Mystic, and Team Instinct. You cannot actually make a team yourself, but you can join one of these three.
Each team is represented by one of three mascots, so-called Legendary Pokémon that few have yet to catch in the game:
Team Instinct is lead by Spark and their mascot is the equally dishevelled legendary bird Zapdos. Spark’s motto is to trust your instincts and your pokémon, so if that sounds like you, then he’s your man.
Blanche heads up the blue team and she’s all about wisdom. The mascot is the plump Articuno. If a logical and academic approach describes your chosen method of worldly interactions, you might want to join their ranks. The inimitable Team Valor is awash with the colour of their fiery passions.
The red team is lead by Candela and is driven by the urge to the very best, and although she’s super keen on things like power and strength, she’s a well-adjusted young woman and definitely not a sociopath. Our mascot is the fancy-looking Moltres.
There are no advantages/disadvantages of joining one team over the other. You can go with anything you like! You can also check your mini-map to see what color gyms are there to dictate your decision. The process is pretty simple, but it’s important to know the steps if you want to get further in the game.
To enter a Gym or capture an open Gym for your team, follow the below steps;
1. Walk up to a gray-colored Gym. gray-colored Gym means it is essentially an undiscovered gym that no one has taken up at. If this is the case, you can place any of your Pokemon here, which won’t be returned to your team until they’re defeated by another.
2. Tap the Gym to enter it.
3. At the bottom of the screen, touch the Add Pokémon
4. Select a Pokémon to add to the Gym. Please note that you can only add one Pokémon per Gym. Your Pokémon won’t be returned to your collection until it’s knocked off the Gym, so choose carefully.
Defending Gyms in Pokémon Go or Claiming a Gym?
Pokémon Go Gyms all have a prestige level. The more the gym wins against opponents, the higher the prestige. If opponents come in and beat the gym leaders, the prestige lowers. When prestige for a gym reaches 0, the gym leader is forced out and the winning trainer can set themselves up as the new leader. You can assign a Pokémon to a Gym already controlled by someone on your team to add to that Gym’s defense. Every Pokémon added by a team member will make it that much harder for an opposing Trainer to defeat your Gym. Remember—you can leave only one Pokémon per Gym, so you will need to get help from friends.
You can train there by battling against your own team’s Pokémon. You’ll gain points as your Pokémon trains, and as the gym’s prestige increases through training, more slots can be opened for you to join and leave a Pokémon to defend the gym. If you manage to defeat all of them, your Gym’s Prestige will go up, making it more difficult to defeat by another team.
Challengers must defeat all of the Pokémon trainers in your gym and reduce its prestige to zero for it to be taken over, so you’ll want to make sure you have one of your stronger Pokémon stationed in your gym to defend it from usurpers. Gyms also have levels of their own. The higher level the gym is, the more people on your team can put Pokémon in the gym. The more Pokémon there are in a gym, the harder it is for challengers to take the gym over.
Pokémon Gym Battles – Attacking Gyms, Claim a Gym from a rival team
Gym Battles are the main part of Pokémon Go, you can attack Gyms being held by another team, claim gyms from a rival team and also become the leader of Gym leader. If you enter a gym corresponding to your team color, you will be able to defend it and participate in Pokemon training.
Coming to defending the gym, each one can have x3 defenders. If you decide to become one of the defenders, you will participate in battles and build prestige which will improve your gym’s defenses by a large margin. However, you must choose a Pokemon before engaging in battles. When you challenge the gym, you can select up to 6 Pokémon of your to take it on. This gives you a bigger chance at taking on a gym and winning. However, if you are just training in a gym owned by your team, you can only bring in one.
Before even considering gym battles, make sure to power up and evolve several of your Pokémon to ensure they are strong enough to compete. If you have been capturing loads of Pokémon up to this point, you should have enough Candy and Stardust available to strengthen at least a few Pokémon.
Power Up requires Stardust. This item is acquired by catching Pokemon and increases a Pokemon’s base stats. You should be able to farm Stardust fairly easy. Evolve requires Candy. Once again, this item is acquired by capturing Pokemon. Furthermore, you can also trade a duplicate Pokemon with Professor Willow in order to acquire more Candy.
However, one important thing to note here is that each Pokemon requires a different flavor of Candy. When it comes to trading, always remember to trade in Pokemon with low CPs. Once you have evolved your Pokemon enough, start participating in battles and defend your gym.
A Gym controlled by a rival team can be claimed by defeating the other team’s Pokémon inside the Gym. Select up to six Pokémon to use in the battle. Each rival Pokémon you defeat reduces the Gym’s Prestige and potentially lowers the Gym’s level. Defeating the rival Gym Leader reduces Prestige by a significant amount. Reduce the Gym’s Prestige to zero to claim the Gym for your team. Gyms can be challenged by multiple Trainers at the same time.
How To claim a gym for your team?
To claim a gym, you must leave one of your own Pokémon there. You might not want to give up your best fighter, but it’s a good idea to leave behind a strong Pokémon to help preserve your team’s honor, as that gym will now proudly boast the color of whichever side you belong to.
How To Become a Gym Leader in Pokémon Go
To become a Gym leader you’ll have to take over an enemy Gym by depleting its Prestige. The next step is finding the appropriate Gym to challenge. If you want to be the gym leader of a gym that is your same color, you can go and challenge the current gym leader and trainers there and as long as the prestige is high enough to have more trainers, you can take over at that time. If the gym is another color, you will actually have a much deeper Pokemon battle where you can use up to six different Pokemon. Gyms will vary in how many trainers they have beyond the leader, but to conquer the gym, you must defeat every trainer at that gym, plus the leader.
After you defeat every trainer in the Gym, the Gym kicks you out. Keep challenging the Gym and you’ll be able to drain the Prestige to zero. Once that team is kicked out, the Gym turns grey and you’ll be able to claim the Gym as your own. Once you have successfully become a Gym Leader, you will need to make sure that your Pokemon has the highest CP among other trainers or you will no longer be the leader.

To heal and revive Pokemon, go to your Items and tap the item you want to use. It’ll take you to a menu with your injured Pokemon. If you do not have any Potions or Revives, simply walk around to PokéStops and gather more PokeCoins. To use a Potion on a Pokémon use the Map View and tap the Main Menu and then Touch Items. There you can choose which ones to heal.
There is another perk to holding a gym. Once every 21 hours, if you go to the shop you will be able to get a bonus. The bonus you will receive is dependant on how many gyms you currently have Pokémon within. For each gym you have a Pokémon in, you will get 10 PokéCoins, as well as 500 Stardust. The more gyms you have, the bigger the bonus.
